I’m a Beauty Girlie Through and Through – Except When it Comes to Hair

I absolutely love beauty. Trying new products, learning about them and, above all, writing about them—it’s one of the subjects I enjoy exploring most.
I think some of that love comes down to how beauty makes me feel. There’s something comforting about taking a moment for myself in a world that seems to move faster and feel scarier by the day. Much like meditating, working out or reading a book, a beauty ritual gives me a chance to slow down and turn my attention back to myself. That doesn’t have to involve a hundred products; sometimes, one small ritual is enough.
My hair, however, has always been a little more complicated. I’ve lost count of the hours I’ve spent trying to master a blowout, straighten it just right or get my curls to behave. You name it, I’ve tried it—with varying degrees of success.
Recently, though, I cut it short. There’s something about a cropped cut with a slightly masculine edge that really appeals to me right now. Rewatching Twin Peaks might have something to do with it. Audrey Horne is always an inspiration, but it’s Josie Packard—with her red lips, fur and sleek, short dark hair—who I can’t stop thinking about.
Or maybe it’s because beauty makes me feel so feminine, and I love the contrast of adding a slightly masculine edge to my look. There’s something about that balance that feels just right.
Short hair has also made getting ready so much easier. A splash of water, a little gel and some hairspray, and I’m good to go. Hair styled in three simple steps!
I’ve never used so little product, either. My hair masks and oils last much longer because I need less of everything, and regular trims help keep my hair feeling softer and less dry. It can’t get any better than that!
Is there a part of your beauty routine you’ve never quite mastered—or simply don’t enjoy? I’d love to hear yours!
